Rolland E. Van Houten, 93, passed away peacefully at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville on Wednesday, July 29, 2015.
Born in Berwick on October 31, 1921, he lived, worked and enjoyed retirement in our area for his entire life. He was the only child of Paul and Ethel Van Houten.
He was a graduate of Berwick public schools and served honorably in the Coast Guard during WWII. He then worked at ACF Industries for 41 years.
He was a member of Knapp Lodge #462, Royal Arch Chapter #218, Mount Moriah Council #107 Crusade Commandery #12. He was also a member of Coldwell Consistory and worked in both the 13th and 14th degrees. Mr. Van Houten was a member of the Irem Arab Patrol Drill Team. He was also a member of the Columbia County Shriners and B.P.O.E. #1138.
His 52 years of marriage to the late Mary Ann DeSalsa produced a life-long commitment to his own children and the children of others.
He is survived by his three daughters: Dianna Zurinsky of Forest Hill, MD; Rosalind Milore of Jarrettsville, MD; and Paula Van Houten, Berwick.
He is also survived by his four granddaughters: Tara Faulkner of Palm City, FL; Kirsten Young of New Windsor, PA; Carlye Oliver of Fallston, MD; and Kristi Fleming of Bel Air, MD.
Also, he is survived by his 11 great-grandchildren: Emily, Meghan, Kathyrn, and Clare Faulkner of Palm City, FL; Brianna Atkinson and Madeleine, Rowan and Liam Young of New Windsor, PA; Logan and Natalie Oliver of Fallston, MD; and Joseph Fleming of Bel Air, MD.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to (checks made to GHSF) the Pediatric Oncology Fund #752346, Geisinger Health System, 100 N. Academy Ave., Danville, Pa 17822-2576.
Graveside services will be Monday August 3, 2015 at 10:00 am at Briar Creek Union Cemetery, Red Brick Church Road, Berwick, with Rev. Ralph Hartenbach officiating.
