Richard “Dick” Allen Shetler passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2022 after battling cancer for several years. He had been a resident of Sunset Ridge Healthcare and Rehab Center since December 2021.
Dick was born May 29, 1935 in Berwick, PA. After graduating from Berwick High School in 1953, he joined the Marines. After completing basic training at Camp Lejeune. he was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. When he returned stateside, he attended Kansas Wesleyan University.
On February 24, 1962 he married Gweneth Cryder, also of Berwick. After a brief time living in Scranton, Dick and Gwen settled in Lightstreet, PA, to raise their four children. They lived there until 1987 when they moved to Lime Ridge. During his career, Dick worked at Reichart’s Lumber, the Lightstreet Hotel, Interstate Motor Freight, Yellow Freight, the Press Enterprise, and Alexander Family Buick GMC.
Dick’s family was his pride and joy. When his children were young, he enjoyed spending one-on-one time with each of them on summer evenings. He loved piling everyone in the car to go for ice cream or just for drives on the back roads. And as they got older, Dick was the chauffeur of choice for the kids and their friends to various practices and school events. The tagline in his high school yearbook profile - “Whenever you hear a group laughing, you can be sure Dick is in the center” - held true throughout his entire life.
Dick was predeceased by his father Charles “Shep” Shetler, mother Lula “Sister” Shetler, and his older brother David. He was also predeceased by his two best friends Clifford Z. “Duck” Kacyon and Charles “Charlie” Mayfield.
In addition to Gweneth, his wife of 60 years, he is survived by his sister Marilee Shetler Socia of VA, his brother Darl “Skip” Shetler and wife Sandra of WV, and multiple nieces and nephews.
