Mary Lou Defrain, 89, of Bloomsburg passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on September 14, 2024 at Allied Services Hospice Center in Wilkes-Barre, after enduring a long battle of failing health. She was born on April 18, 1935 in Jackson Township, Columbia County, a daughter of the late Bruce and Lula (Musselman) Young. She was a faithful wife to the late Frederick Defrain Sr., with whom she celebrated 25 years of marriage.
Mary Lou was an advent gardener, she enjoyed spending her days in her garden and sharing her rose bushes. She also enjoyed knitting, listening to country and polka music, but most of all loved spending precious time with her family and friends.
She worked for the former Dockey Shirt Factory in Benton, Boone’s Nursing Home in Eyersgrove, County Maid in Berwick, Briar Knitting in Berwick, and the Consolidated Cigar Factory in Berwick.
Surviving are her children: Randy Kessler wife Beth of Millville, RoseMary Swisher husband Jack of Bloomsburg, James Defrain with whom she shared a home with in Bloomsburg, son-in-law Kavin Mowery of Berwick, stepchildren: Patricia Francis of Bloomsburg, step-daughter-in-law Frances Defrain, brothers: Carlton Young wife Connie of Benton, Larry Young wife Cindy of Millville, Dale Young wife Betty of Millville, sister Evelyn Shultz husband Robert of Millville, and brother-in-law John Gearhart of Berwick. As well as grandchildren: David Mowery of Berwick, Richard Mowery of Bloomsburg, Amber Kriner husband Erik of Bloomsburg, Autumn Zanolini husband Christopher of Bloomsburg, Helen Bagley of Texas, BillyJack Francis, Edward Francis, Diane, Shawn Defrain, Sabrina, Candice, great-grandchildren: MaryAnna and Mikla from Berwick. Kierra and Rylen from Bloomsburg. Kael, Sage, Trinity, Cayn and Everly from Bloomsburg, great-great-grandchildren: Colton, Ian, and Joshua from Berwick, and many nieces and nephews.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents as well her husband Frederick, daughter Linda Mowery, stepsons David and Frederick Defrain, brothers: Charles Young wife Betty, Donald Young wife Geraldine, Bruce Young wife Sandra, sister Edna Gearhart, grandchild Kevin Mowery, three nieces, a nephew, and step-son-in law Edward Francis Sr.
Services will be Friday September 20, 2024 at 11:00 am at the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 1024 Market St., Berwick with Pastor Chris Dunlap officiating. Burial will follow at Mifflinville Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10:00 am until time of service at the funeral home.
