Joan Harmon Obituary

Joan Marie (Thomas) Harmon, 94, went to be with the Lord on June 25, 2026, at her home in Berwick. She was born on May 26, 1932, in Folstown, PA, a daughter of the late Ed and Alverta Thomas.

She married Zane Whitmire in 1951 and had five children together. After his passing she later married Martin Harmon, who has six children.

Joan graduated from Berwick High School and then went onto nursing school in Williamsport where she graduated in 1952 with her registered nursing degree. She was a dedicated nurse at Berwick Hospital then moved on to Danville State Hospital until she retired.

She was a member of Bethany Church in Berwick for her entire life, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed singing with the choir and later with the praise group.

After the loss of her daughter Lonnie, she started a grief group at Bethany which is still going on today. She also wrote a book about the stages of grief and how the scriptures can help you get through.

Joan is survived by her daughter Bonnie Knolla who lived with her, son Randy Whitmire of Florida, sister Nancy Yohey of Virginia, brother Morgan Thomas of Illinois, stepchildren; Dan Harmon, Tim Harmon, Mike Harmon, and Sue Cope. As well as 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her first husband Zane Whitmire, daughter Lonnie Hons, sons Mike and Jeff Whitmire, second husband Martin Harmon, and his two sons Tom and Marty Harmon.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Bethany Church in Berwick. Family and friends may send condolences online to jameslhinckleyjrfuneralhome.com.
