James R. Crouse, age 89 of Berwick, died Saturday, July 31 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville surrounded by his family. Jim was born June 23,1932 in the house he lived in most of his life. He was the only child of the late Harvey W. and Madelyn Lewis Crouse. On September 26, 1964, he and Janet Whitmire were married at Wesley United Methodist Church, Nescopeck. Jim often remarked that he enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up with his parents, grandmother Mammy, and his Aunt Rhoda. He spent many summers at Jonestown, camping, fishing, and exploring the woods and creek.
He attended Berwick schools.
He began working at Vaughn's bakery when he was 16 and remained there until he entered the US Army in January of 1953. He then returned there following his honorable discharge in January of 1955. He later worked for Zephyr Lanes, Les Mengle, P.L. Lawton and retired from Wise Foods in 1993. He loved truck driving and being a trucker.
After his retirement, he worked for Towne Marine, pulling boats along the East Coast. His favorite vacations were spent in Ocean City, MD with his family.
Jim enjoyed all sports, fishing and hunting. He was a big fan of local school sports. In his teens, he played basketball and was in the Y League. In his twenties, he bowled in many local leagues and tournaments, and throughout Eastern Pennsylvania.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Nescopeck; Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Company Station #159; American Legion Post #945; Teamster Local 401; NRA, and the DVA.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet; daughter Samantha J. Thomas and husband William; daughter Joanna D Mylet and husband Jeffery; and grandson Ethan Mylet.; niece Angela Whitmire and her fiancee Chris Blockus and niece Crystal Whitmire and their families, all of Berwick.
According to his wishes, services are private. His Pastor, Pastor Susan K. Knorr will officiate the service.
