Helen Hunsinger Obituary

Helen H. Hunsinger, 101, passed into a better life on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Sunset Ridge Healthcare and Rehabilitation. She was the daughter of Raymond and Myrtle (Gulliver) Huntington. She was born at home on the farm in Lime Ridge. She was the middle of seven children.

She grew up on the farm in Lime Ridge. She attended Lime Ridge school until eighth grade then transferred to Bloomsburg’s school where she graduated in 1938. She married Donald C. Hunsinger on June 8, 1946, and moved to Mifflinville and lived there for more than 70 years. They were married for 52 years. In 1958 she started working as head cook at the Mifflinville Elementary School. She retired in 1988 after 30 years.

Helen was an active member of the Mifflinville United Methodist Church. She was one of the original organizers of the Easter Egg Committee. Each year they made eggs as a fund raiser for the church. She was very proud of this.

Helen enjoyed camping with her family, going to football games and tailgating. She was the Girl Scout Cookie Chairwoman for many years when her daughter was in Scouts. She enjoyed being the “sauce” maker at the Central Columbia Baseball Team’s Spaghetti Dinner when her son-in-law was the coach.

Her favorite things to do always had something to do with growing vegetables and flowers. She loved working in the garden and in her flower beds. Then, she enjoyed canning and freezing her vegetables. She loved her roses and always had them setting on her table in the summer. She was always cooking and baking. Her raisin filled cookies and her chocolate chip cookies were known to be the best.

Helen loved her front porch. She spent many years enjoying it—reading and watching the traffic go by. It was her way of relaxing. In August of 2019, she was the Grand Marshal of the 225th anniversary parade of Mifflinville. She was the oldest resident at age 99. In March of 2020, she was featured in the Bloomsburg Neighbors magazine as a Centenarian at 100 years old.

In later years she became an avid bird watcher. She had a favorite, ”Woody”, who would come back to see her every winter. She watched for him daily. She also dearly loved her great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Londyn and Myles. She called them “Rascals” and loved having them around.

Helen is survived by a daughter, Jean Devlin (Gerald), Bloomsburg; a son, R. James Hunsinger, Bechtelsville; a grandson, Kyle (Alicia); three great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Londyn, Myles, Mifflinville; a brother, R. Edward Huntington, Berwick; a sister, Edna Eroh, Mifflinville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Hunsinger; her parents, Raymond and Myrtle Huntington; two brothers: William and Clifton Huntington; two sisters: Mary Sponenberg and Esther Hoagland.
