Frederick (Fred) D Ackerman Jr.

Frederick (Fred) D. Ackerman Jr., 84, passed away on June 29, 2022, at his home in Scott Township. He was born Jan. 23, 1938, in Williamsport, to Geraldine (Confer) and Frederick D. Ackerman Sr. 

He was a 1955 graduate of Williamsport High School. Upon graduation, Fred entered the U.S. Air Force where he served five years of active duty. While in the Air Force, he attended Yale University Institute of Far Eastern Languages, where he studied basic and intermediate Mandarin Chinese. When honorably discharged, Fred held the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In 1961, Fred became employed by the JCPenney Company and spent 37 years holding various positions within the company. He retired in February 1998. For a short time after retirement, Fred worked for Folk Florist and the U.S. Census. Fred served as a school board member in Troy, and as a Scott Township supervisor for 18 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Catherine F. (Sabella) Ackerman; son, Fred, (Wendy) of Mainville; and daughter, Geri (Paul) Ressler, of Enola. He is also survived by a brother, Charles, and wife, Joanne; and sister, Helen Mileto, and husband, Anthony, all of South Williamsport; along with a brother-in-law, James Sabella, of Bloomsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a beloved grandson, Christian, and granddaughter, Anna, with whom he loved to spend time.

Fred was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He was also a 50 year Master Mason.

Services will be Friday, July 1, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 1024 Market St., Berwick, with the Rev. Gordon Smith officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
