Frederick J. Scala, 72, of Berwick passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Geisinger Medical Center.
Born in Berwick on November 5, 1951, Fred was the son of the late Michael and Angeline (Rose) Scala, as well as the loving husband of Nancy (Williams) Scala for 26 years.
Following his 1969 graduation, Fred worked at Deluxe Homes and for Scala Brothers Distributors. He also became a landlord for several properties. Upon Scala's career change, he became a school bus driver for W.L. Meyers in Danville and recently enjoyed the last 7 years driving school bus for John Gallagher Transportation. In addition, he had a small payroll business for local restaurants.
A devout Catholic, Fred was an active member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Berwick. He was a member of Maria Assunta and Garibaldi Societies, a life member of West Berwick Fire Hall, and also an avid fan of the New York Yankees. In his spare time, he enjoyed vacationing in Las Vegas and Wildwood, NJ and making Italian pasta and cookies for the family often. Additionally, he always laughed when he repeated that he was a lifelong resident of Washington Street in Berwick.
His greatest pride, however, was his close relationship with his loved ones. In addition to his wife, the former Nancy Williams, he is survived by his brother, Tony, and his wife, Caria; his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Scala; nieces, Megan; Marissa and husband, Dr. Jim Mattucci; Lisa and husband, Brian Tucker; nephew, Anthony and Samantha Scala and great-nephew Anthony.
Also, he is survived by his loving step-children, Kelly Marinaro, Janel and Larry Yorks, Belinda and Jason Smith, six granddaughters, and seven great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael C. Scala Jr.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, December 11, 2023 at 11a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 721 Monroe St., Berwick with the Reverend William Barbee, his pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. Family will receive friends from 10:00 am until time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Boys Town, or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
