Carol Clayton Obituary

With the sun peaking through the clouds and a brilliant blue sky beyond, Carol L. (Lockard – Whitmire) Clayton, 75 of Berwick, settled on her raft, the smell of suntan lotion and sea salt in the air, she closed her eyes and drifted off, Wednesday afternoon October 18, 2023. Nothing but a cool ocean breeze, the call of seagulls, and the warmth of the sun on her face to escort her home.

Born November 23, 1947 in Berwick. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Ruth (Henrie) Lockard.

Carol attended Berwick High School. She worked at Briar Creek Manufacturing, a division of Lady Esther, as a lace inspector.  She later worked for Wise Food Inc., where she was a Route Accounting Clerk .

In her later years, Carol loved spending summers clamming, fishing and boating, with her family, in Delaware at Tuckahoe Acres, Dagsboro.  When she was younger she enjoyed singing at local churches and ice cream socials around the area with the “Summerhill Family Singers”.

She will be greatly missed by her children: Douglas Whitmire and wife Molly, Patrick Whitmire and wife JoHanna, Christina (Whitmire) Yaple and husband David. Grandchildren, Emilie and Erinn Whitmire, Brenna and Tessa Yaple. Sister: Barbara Correll and husband Tom; Brothers: David Lockard, and Donald Lockard; Sisters-in-law: Gloria Lockard, AnnaMae Lockard, and Diane Hook; Brothers-in-law: Trevor Clayton and wife Margaret (England), Doyle Whitmire, Jr. and wife Susan.  As well as many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews both here and in England.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the loves of her life Carrol E. Whitmire, and Richard A. Clayton; an infant son, Michael; Brothers Richard Lockard and Robert Lockard.
