Robert E. Smith

Robert E. Smith, 91, of Berwick passed away Wednesday July 24, 2019 at Berwick Hospital. He was born October 7, 1927 in Berwick, a son of the late Charles and Martha (Lanning) Smith.

He graduated from Berwick High School and then joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War where he was a Corporal. After the war, Bob graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College. Robert taught at Delaware Valley Central School in Callicoon, New York for over 33 years. Bob was a member of Berwick Elks, Berwick V.F.W. Eagle Hose Company in Berwick, Kiwanis, Bloomsburg American Legion, Tamarack Hunting Club, and a life time member of Callicoon Fire Department. Bob loved to go fishing, hunting, being outdoors, gardening, and teaching.  

Robert is survived by his wife the former Pauline Stevens whom he married September 26, 1958, four children; Douglas Smith wife Robin of Greensboro, NC, Paula MacDonald and significant other David Harvey of Honesdale, PA, Joseph Smith and significant other Diane Davies of Berwick, Craig Smith wife Lisa of Cocheton, NY, eight grandchildren; Thomas, Lydia, Jefferson and his wife Lorilie, Kent and wife Erin, Ella, Sarah, Kaitlyn, and Chase, and two great-grandchildren; Eric and Adam.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents as well his brother Sterling Smith.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday July 28, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 1024 Market St., Berwick, PA 18603 with Father Francis Tamburro officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Pine Grove Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until time of service at the funeral home.
