Dr. Joseph O. Simington, 99, of Danville, formerly of Berwick, passed away June 12, 2016, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born Dec. 4, 1916, in Mooresburg, Montour County, Dr. Simington was the son of the late William M. Simington and Alice Bower Simington.

Dr. Simington was a graduate of Danville High School; the Pennsylvania State College (now university), and the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School.

Upon graduation from high school, he entered the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). Upon completion of his tour with the CCC, he enrolled at Pennsylvania State College, where he received his certificate in forestry, later transferring to animal husbandry. Upon completion of his studies at Pennsylvania State College, Dr. Simington enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School, from which he graduated with the degree of Veterinary Medical Doctor (V.M.D.)

Upon receiving his degree of V.M.D., he enlisted in the U.S. Army, Veterinary Corps, where he served for 3½ years. Dr. Simington was assigned for duty in England during the invasion of the continent on D-Day in France, when Germany surrendered (V-E Day), after which he was enroute to the Pacific area when Japan surrendered. Upon completion of his tour of duty in the Army, he was given an Honorable Discharge with the rank of major.

Dr. Simington opened his veterinary practice in Berwick in 1947, where he had practiced veterinary medicine until December 30, 2004, a period of 57 years. He was trustee of the Central Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association for many years, and was elected Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association.

Locally, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Berwick; Berwick Rotary Club; and was a Master Mason, Knapp Lodge 462, Berwick.

Dr. Simington is survived by two brothers: David Simington of Sunbury, and Paul Simington of Northumberland; three sisters: Ann Scott of Williamsburg, Va.; Mary Jane Johnson of Danville, and Martha Cole of Northumberland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Louise Lawton, and brother, Dr. William B. Simington.

Masonic services will be Friday, June 17, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 1024 Market St., Berwick, by Knapp Lodge 462, Berwick. Funeral services will start directly after Masonic services. Burial will follow at Millville Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
